Reviews
Nice museum with a decent variety of displays and an upstairs section with some miniatures and dioramas. Some placards and descriptions are in English which is good for tourists. The museum is a nice, inexpensive and fascinating visit for anyone interested in trams and railway tech. You can walk through some of the trams, and ring the bells on them which is quite cool. There's some play areas and a small interactive tram for kids. At the time we were there, very few of the upstairs displays were interactive and there were not a lot of placards offering information. It's not a terribly diverse or large museum so it may not be the best stop for tourists only visiting for a day or two, unless you're really interested in Trams specifically. Staff are super nice and seem to be passionate about the museum.
I liked exploring the museum and looking in and outside of the trams they had in display of the history of the city of Zürich trams through different years and moments of its time and present throughout the city.
However parts of the experience were ruined during some parts of the visit, as there were some children who were just out of control screaming at the top of their lungs and the parents / carer did nothing about it, and they were running, jumping and fighting around the entire place and making so much sound and screaming you can hear them on the other side of the museum, even though they had left later on I was still really annoyed at the parents / carers for not doing anything in putting their children in place instead of them being a nuisance too everyone there looking around.
Good collection of historic trams that still run. Impressive!
However, it is expensive for what it offers. Small museum, nothing in English. No guided tour or audio. If you don’t know German, you’ll end up using a translation app all the time. Also, most of the interactive things just don’t work. Very unlikely of a Swiss place!
Given that we love trams, we really wanted to visit this place to understand their history, but we ended up being disappointed. Could be so so so much better. I wouldn’t recommend this place for a tourist or a local or schools (especially in summer).
I really hope the authorities take note and turn this place around.
In this old garage originally used for tram repairs, visitors can get close and personal with a large number of vintage trams from various decades. Visitors can see, touch, and climb aboard many of the trams. This museum has bonus features to use and explore such as a children play area, meeting space, old labels & signs, old ticket machines, model trains, and even an open repair pit for visitors to climb under one of the trams for a unique view. The gentleman at the entrance was so friendly and professional. In short, if you are a fan of trains, electric cable cars, or infrastructure in general, this museum is a must see! (I am an English-speaking tourist and I visited for free using the Swiss Travel Pass. I spent about 1 hour at the museum.)
Very nice small museum. Good for kids too
Interesting exhibit of Zurich’s old trams over the years, lovely to sit on the old wooden benches. Fun for young kids to jump on and off the trams. There’s a small train set for the littlest ones to play with, and bigger kids can drive the mini-tram on its own short track. Good family excursion for +-1 hour.
Cool depot with around 15 trams. Interesting but not so much. The security guy patrolling between the trams gets annoyed if children ring the bells of the trams. They are children, they like this stuff, maybe he forgot how it was.
A very good place to visit. Lots of interactive exhibits, old trams, and they're all running. You can go inside each one, there is a dubbing of stands in English
